Transmission Flush or Fluid Change - Common FAQ's
1. What is the difference between a transmission flush and a fluid change?
A transmission fluid change typically replaces about 60–75% of the old fluid and includes installing a new filter and pan gasket.
A transmission flush requires the use of a machine to remove over 99% of the old fluid, including fluid that is in the torque converter and cooler lines.
2. How often should I get a transmission flush or fluid change?
Transmission flush and fluid intervals vary by vehicle type and driving conditions. Generally, a fluid change is recommended every 30,000–60,000 miles, while a flush may be suggested every 45,000 miles, especially for newer vehicles. Check with your Vehicle Owner's Manual. If you can’t find it, we can help you out!
3. Can a transmission flush cause damage to my vehicle?
If performed correctly, a transmission flush is safe. However, in high-mileage vehicles with built-up debris, a flush may loosen particles that could lead to complications.
4. Is a transmission flush required for older vehicles?
For vehicles over 100,000 miles that have never had a transmission flush, quite often it is safer to perform a fluid change instead of a full transmission flush just to avoid potential damage.
5. What are the signs that transmission service is needed?
The indicators include dark or burnt-smelling fluid, slipping gears, rough shifting, or unusual noises coming from your vehicle. These symptoms suggest the need for a fluid change or transmission flush.
6. Will a transmission flush fix my existing transmission problems?
No, a transmission flush is just a preventive maintenance measure. A flush or fluid change does not resolve underlying issues with your transmission. We offer free transmission diagnostics with up-front pricing here at our shop in St. Peters, MO. Come by today!
7. Should I always use the manufacturer's recommended fluid?
Yes, you should always use the fluid type specified in your vehicle's manual. Using a generic or incorrect fluid can lead to serious transmission issues.
8. Are there any risks associated with a transmission flush?
If not done properly, a transmission flush can dislodge debris, which can cause blockages or damage. It's crucial to have a qualified technician perform this preventative maintenance service.
